Always More: A Thanksgiving Poem

Always More: A Thanksgiving Poem

"These things are scarce," I heard them say,
"We're running out," they swore,
But look around yourself today,
Always more, always more.

Just breathe in deep the freshest air
Until your lungs are sore.
Breathe all day, no fume to spare,
Always more, always more.

Or stretch your eyes from dusk 'til day,
Count the stars on Heaven's door.
Now look inside where angels play,
Always more, always more.

Or scan the sea, a shallow blue
If waves are ocean floor,
But dive beneath the surface hue,
Always more, always more.

And hunger does not prove the lack
Of bread we have in store.
Bulging bellies bend our backs
Always more, always more.

This nature's boast, the heart of man,
It pumps like gallons poured.
Our veins can reach to space and back!
Always more, always more.

But men can drown when vessels leak,
There is blood upon the shore.
Our pride’s desire knows no end,
Always war, always war.

Though reservoirs of red, we’ve found,
Are blacker than before,
Now in the darkness love abounds
Always more, always more.

For something deep and wider still
Is drawn from wells by whores.
"Come," He said, "And drink your fill,”
Always more, always more.

This abundance is no fragile thing,
It’s copious to the core,
For when the Maker makes, there’ll be
Always more, always more

So eat with family and friends,
And talk and laugh and snore,
And endlessly give thanks for this,
Always more, always more.
